wing tsun kung fu
Wing Tsun is a Chinese martial art said to be founded by Ng Mui, a Buddhist nun from the Shaolin temple over 300 years ago. Legend has it that her first student was a woman called Yim Wing Tsun from whom the art gets it's name. It was taught secretly or in small groups until the late great Grandmaster Yip Man began to teach it openly in Hong Kong in the late 1940's. His most famous student was Bruce Lee who began training as a teenager.
Wing Tsun is a martial art that focuses on finishing a fight as quickly as possible. It emphasises close range striking with hands, feet, elbows, knees, etc in a relaxed manner while depriving the opponent an opportunity to counter strike. Rather than requiring a student to remember countless techniques, Wing Tsun emphasises fighting principles with techniques merely being an example of how to implement the principles.
Students first begin to learn the Siu Nim Tau form where they learn biomechanically efficient movements. These movements are then used as the backbone for self defence techniques. Then students are taught specific drills to hardwire the movements into their nervous system so that they can react automatically with unconscious competence when needed. As the student gains experience, the simple forms, techniques and drills grow in complexity.
